Parliament speaker Talat Xhaferi today is expected to release an official announcement of calling presidential elections, slated for April 21.
On the basis of Electoral Code – a code that regulates the manner, conditions and procedure for election of President – elections shall be held not sooner than 70 and no later than 90 days from the date of calling the elections.
Term of office of incumbent President Gjorgje Ivanov expires on May 12.
The country’s two largest political parties have not yet unveiled their candidate for president. The opposition VMRO-DPMNE recently disclosed a list of dozen potential candidates for next president but with no mention of early front-runner. The party will pick its candidate on February 16.
The ruling Social Democrats (SDSM) will pick their candidate at party congress, to be held on March 3.
